Reality Internet

by Phil Sprawls

Pics or it didn’t happen! That phrase became popular years ago, but it still makes me laugh. In some ways, it was the first time we all acknowledged that we can’t trust everything people say on the Internet. Now we are in the era of Fake News and Fake Reviews, reaching a new level of questioning what is real online.

It sunk in for me when my wife and I were expecting our first child and started shopping online for the important items he needed. With all the bloggers, reviews, and comparison sites, our heads were spinning trying to figure out what info to trust and which bassinet, stroller, car seat, etc. to buy. We did our best with online research and outreach to friends with kids.

To no one’s surprise, we loved the items our friends recommended and had mixed results with the items we researched online. And that’s when it hit me – why can’t you just shop the items your friends bought online? They are the ones who can shoot you straight on products and guess what – they have bought tons of great stuff.

So we decided to create Hansel and give people an easier way to buy products they love online. It’s a simple add-on for Chrome that lets you see items your friends bought. Just people you really know, stuff they really bought, and full privacy controls. And it works with existing sites so you don’t have to learn how to use a new app or do any extra work.

The Internet is an amazing resource, but it sure has gotten harder to figure out which info on there will get you what you want. Let’s take a step back and remember that the people we know in real life are the ones who know us best – not Facebook or Google. Get a few people you trust to try Hansel with you, and you’ll be amazed at what you can discover!
